About the Java Plug-In

The Java Plug-In is a browser extension that some browsers require to display modern applets. Technically, Java consists of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE, which includes the system libraries supporting Java) and the Java Plug-In (JPI, additional libraries allowing Web browsers to make use of the JRE), but these are usually installed together as part of the same software package.
